Hate Is a Plant
It sprang from the
rocky earth
between luscious orange
marigolds and other
preferable plants
mad at the world
from the start--
it only thrives
in subzero temperatures
no one
wants one of these bastards
in their garden
they only notice it when they
reach for their geraniums
and get pricked (ouch!)
all the pesticide
in two worlds combined
can't destroy it
but only pollinate it
brooding pollination
for everyone to inhale
like carbon monoxide--
it only thrives
because of us
i liked this poem the moment i read the title.
